Dialog: "We do have alcoholic beverages on this flight."

The auxiliary verb "do" isn't normally used in affirmative sentences. However, when you wish to emphasize something about which you feel strongly or to express something contrary to what another person believes, you can use it. When used as an auxiliary verb it's always followed by the infinitive without "to".

  • We don't have any more of that shampoo in stock, but we do have this wonderful new brand that's just come out on the market.
  • He may not have all the information, but Jack does know what needs to be done at the construction site.
  • If you were wondering, she does have a sister. And she's beautiful!
  • The teacher accused me of not studying for the test. But I did study. I studied all night long!
  • No one can actually believe it but they did get the project done before the deadline. I, on the other hand, handed mine in two days late.
