WORDS OF EMPHASIS
Dialog: "She's not nearly as qualified as I am."
These words can be used in both spoken and written English to add emphasis: Not nearly means far from near; not at all. Almost means a little short of; very nearly; not quite. Nothing like means not anything like. A bit means somewhat or a little. Pay attention to the position of these words in the sentences.
1) NOT NEARLY
- That test wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be.
- In high school she didn't have nearly as many friends as her sister did.
2) ALMOST
- I almost missed the bus this morning.
- Hurry, it's almost time to go!
3) NOTHING LIKE
- This tastes nothing like mom's apple pie.
- There's nothing like a nice cold glass of lemonade on a hot day.
4) A BIT
- You had better grab some pie; there's only a bit left.
- I don't have a bit of sympathy for him.
