Yesterday I was working in my computer and I see that my anti-virus are disable. When I turn it on, I had only 27 virus on my system! Damn!

Eu acho que você deveria dizer “I saw that my anti-virus was disable”. Good luck with the virus thing, Paulo. Here on my job I have to deal with virus and bugs the all day long...

You're right Edu.
The past of "see" = saw! I got it! Thanks for helping me.

Por: Ash em 27/11/2009 às 12:16h
Na verdade, o mais certo é: "I saw that my ant-virus was disabled."

Você estava trabalhando dentro do seu computador, PGregory? Hmmm, I think you were working on your computer. rsrs

Hi Tamara! I'm very curious about the sentence sent by eduardopeixoto. In the word "understand", is under a prefix that changes the meaning of the word stand? or is it not?

Por: genilton em 02/12/2009 às 12:26h
Now, my sentence using prefix:
Overcontrol is not a desired behavior when it comes to relationships between parents and kids.

Por: Josh em 02/12/2009 às 14:49h
Hey, Genilton. Unfortunately, some words just can't use the prefix "over-", like in this case here. However, a couple of adjectives that might work in this case could be: "To be overbearing ..." (dominating, autocratic, tyrannical, despotic, oppressive) or "to be overpowering ..."(oppressive, unbearable, unendurable, intolerable).

Hello Josh! Thanks for your comments.
I had found this word in the site "Signs of Overcontrol" (http://www.controllingparents.com/Signs.htm). Is it wrong?
After reading your comment, I did search the internet and found many other sites but I don't know if they are reliable:
- http://www.springerlink.com/content/x2g6w8062110t392/
- http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/overcontrol

Well, Genilton, this just goes to show you how versatile the English language is. "Overcontrol" is not in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary or the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. But, as you've clearly shown, it is widely used, even in the New York Times. All I have to say is well done. Great research on your part. On my part, "overcontrol" is one of those words that just doesn't sound right to me! Thanks for the participation and definitely keep it up!

I don't think Jim was underestimated at all. If you are someone who continually can't meet deadlines then you should either be demoted or fired. When contracts are lost, money is lost and the employee responsible for that loss needs to pay the consequences! (When someone is underestimated it means that he or she has wonderful qualities that other people are unable to see.)

Some teachers in our country are underqualified, maybe because they are underpaid.

Wow! Not only is your sentence perfect, it is also a very accurate observation. Well done!

First of all being a teacher is about LOVE... Otherwise this occupation would have already been extincted in Brazil Lol... UNDERstand me? Another I like... Undercontrol (doubt undercontrol or under control??)
Foto
Por: Ash em 07/01/2010 às 10:44h
Everything is under control.
Here it's not used as a prefix because there is no "lack" of control or too little control, but quite the opposite, "total" control.
For example, something that is underrated is rated too low, underestimated.

Exactly as I had thought, tks for ur help, ALWAYS great!

Por: Cammi em 07/01/2010 às 02:38h
Now I got myself in another doubt after doing all the lesson... so there is a topic in the lab saying underrated= subestimar and as I know (too) underestimate, so I can use both, Is there any special use???
Foto
Por: Ash em 07/01/2010 às 10:49h
Well, it's not exactly a rule, but you'll find that we normally underestimate people, or things related to humans (the mind for example), and we underrate things, like a film or a book.

The education in the underdeveloped countries don't have the importance that it is necessary. I beleive it. If people have a good education they will have a better life.

I totally agree with you, education doesn't have the deserved (merecida) importance.

I think that I'm underpaid. But if I'd paid as my wife thinks, I'd be overpaid.
Foto
Por: Josh em 26/03/2010 às 11:53h
I laughed out loud when I read your comment, Sandro. There is only one little mistake in your sentence: "But if I were paid like my wife thinks (I should be), I'd be overpaid." Good job. You can also say: "But if I got paid like my wife thinks..."

She overreact when she saw him.

He thinks that him is underpaid
Foto
Por: Josh em 05/04/2010 às 13:08h
Your first sentence is great. Explain what you mean by "overreact" so I know that you understood what it means, ok? Your second sentence needs a tiny correction: "He thinks that he is underpaid." Do you see?

Our soccer Stadiums will be underdeveloped at the World Cup that will be played in Brazil in 2014. So, we must get rid of our incompetent politician.

Why people love the word "overrated"?
Foto
Por: saddhucool em 27/07/2010 às 20:24h
I disagree that this setence is correct: "This movie didn't do as well as it should. It's definitely underrated." For me the correct should be overrated. What you thing?
