According to the World Health Organization, nearly 2 billion people have been exposed to the tuberculosis pathogen. It's a disease that primarily effects populations in developing countries. In today's lesson commemorating World Health Day, you'll learn about the role Brazil has played in helping to combat this infectious disease.
At the end of this lesson you'll be able to:
Brazil has recently been recognized as the reference in the fight against tuberculosis among all other developing countries.
According to a statement made to the UN by former President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, of all the developing countries, Brazil leads the way in the fight against tuberculosis. He and Brazilian Health Minister, José Gomes Temporão, have participated in the 3rd Stop TB Partners Forum held recently in Rio de Janeiro. The forum discussed the path it will take in fighting tuberculosis around the world. "Adding up what Brazil has done in the combat against HIV/Aids, and what it's doing against tuberculosis, the country is an important example for all nations that are currently called emerging nations", affirmed Sampaio. "It's a question of political leadership" he stated.
The World Health Organization has also reinforced its support in the actions Brazil has taken to fight the disease. According to a message sent by the general director of WHO, Margaret Chan, the country has their complete support in its steps to prevent and treat tuberculosis. She cited the improvements made by the staff of Brazil's Family Health Strategy in the supervision of the treatment. The program was amplified from 7% in 2001 to 75% in 2008.
Health Minister José Gomes Temporão has pledged to help other countries in the fight against tuberculosis, especially African countries. "Brazil can, should, and wants to do more; whether it be in improving the national policy in controlling the disease, stepping up our presence in the multilateral forums, or in assuming new responsibilities in support of poorer nations", emphasized Temporão. For the executive secretary of STOP TB, Marcos Espinal, the country plays an important role in the fight against tuberculosis due to the significant participation from society and through its government actions.

However, I think that in the "fill the gaps" part of the exercises you should put the verbs in the infinitive form, as the students would have put them in the appropriate tense for each sentence.
In the current system, one could just check if the verb in the expression fits the gap, not really thinking about its meaning.
