Introdução

"All the songs of the east speak of the love of the nightingale for the rose in the silent starlight night. The winged songster serenades the fragrant flowers." And so begins Hans Christian Anderson's tale, A Rose from Homer's Grave. That's right, in today's lesson you'll be listening to a fairy tale... (It's ok. You can be an adult and still like fairy tales. We won't tell anyone!)

Metas

At the end of this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Understand the use of "as if"
  • Use more literary terms
  • Understand the different uses of "bow"

My favo(u)rite fairy tale is The Ugly Duckling. But I do prefer the modern fairy tales to the classic ones.

Eder 82,
When you say modern fairy tales you mean the modern version of the classic ones?

Yup, that is a great movie, Corbucci! Why is that?

Corbucci, how has Shreck defined your life? If there is one fairy tale that has defined my life, it would have to be The Ugly Duckling, in reverse!

My all time favorite fairy tale is Beauty And The Beast. It proves love can blossom between two very different people and that looks are not the only thing a person has to look for when looking for a relationship.

Hey, Josh! In the recorded audio you said what your favorite fairy tale is, but I didn't understand. Can you please write the fairy tale title? When my son was a little boy, he always told me a false story to justificate his tricks (travessuras?). At these moments, I always told him the story "The Shepherd's Boy and the Wolf". As a result of this, he doesn't like this story.

Hey, Genilton. My favorite fairy tale is "Hansel and Gretel", the story of two young children who get lost in the woods only to find themselves in a gingerbread house - where they are almost eaten by a witch! The story you told your boy is one of my favorites, too. If you want a story with a moral, there isn't a better one than that!

Hey, there. I think that's a wonder and difficult lesson, full of words I didn't know yet. So, I've decided to study it again. Please help me to understand the means of "He who sung of Troy became earth, and from that earth I have sprung". She has said Homer sung of Troy and after die Homer became earth? And from that earth (Homer), have the rose sprung?

You got it, Genilton! Homer wrote about (sung of) Troy. When Homer died he became part of the earth, and it is from that earth that the rose bloomed (sprung).
