It's a dog-eat-dog world out there in the job market, and finding a job can be a difficult task. But our task for this lesson, I'm sure, will be much easier and more enjoyable! What do you think is important to get a job and maintain it?
Foto
Por: rcpb em 21/12/2009 às 11:11h
I'll be like to get that promotion because I have a seniority and love this profission.

Josh, I want you to paying attention the conversation between Liz and Phyllis and tell me, when Liz says 'were in line' it isn't 'were in mind" instead?
Foto
Por: Josh em 29/06/2010 às 11:36h
I can see how it might sound like that. I listened to it several times. It's the combination of words - in line / in mind. The pronunciation of the final sounds is the same in both - there's no "d" sound in "mind". And with the "in" connecting to "line", it gives the impression that the sound is "mine". You've got very good ears!

I beleive in meritocracy, not seniority!

Good thinking, apessoa!

I think the basic is having wrath and determination to solve problems. And a little of politics. Because people have to see how much you're working.
Foto
Por: Ash em 14/10/2009 às 14:55h
Eduardo, I don't think "wrath" is a good word to use here. In fact, if my boss or co-worker had wrath, I'd quit my job!! Wrath is vindictive anger, so anyone who has wrath these days is probably not a very popular person! lol!
Foto
Por: eduardopeixoto em 14/10/2009 às 15:08h
Oh... I've switched the words by mistake... I wanted to say "claw" instead or "wrath".

I do believe in a combination of ambition and experience. In my way of view, both things can't be seperated. People should be able to keep it in mind all the time. When a new chance appears in our lives and usually we don't know when it happens, we have to be ready to face it and show them our best skills.
Foto
Por: Ash em 14/10/2009 às 19:28h
You are absolutely right, Rodrigo. Great comment! A more "native" way of saying in my way of view is, in my point of view.

I think that when you get a long time in the same company it´s more difficult to stay motivated all the time. Besides, we can enter in a comfort zone that is bad for us, we have to try to learn, get experience and do better all days, even when we are not charged anymore.
Foto
Por: Josh em 15/10/2009 às 07:16h
I agree, AbacaFrehley, it can be difficult to stay motivated all the time. We should try to avoid getting into that comfort zone, otherwise we may become complacent. So it really is important to do better every day. Great comments! Well done.

Yeah, Rodrigo, this is a bug that we've been trying to fix. Just to let you know, we're working on it! Thanks for pointing this out to us! As soon as we've got this fixed we'll let you know.

Many people give exagerated value to seniority. I think seniority can give you experience and knowledge, but it can give you excess of confidence and demotivation. A bit of ambition is not a bad idea.

Por: monicabic em 22/10/2009 às 16:24h
Very well put Genilton. Both in terms of your ideas as in the grammar structure. Good job!

Por: ls.correa em 23/12/2009 às 16:10h
In my oppinion,it is a combination of ambition, seniority and, of course, your skills or qualifications, without them you will not get a promotion, or even worse, you will never be in line to get one :-)
It doesn't matter the company you work for, it is a must to have this combination if you want to succeed.

Por: monicabic em 23/12/2009 às 16:56h
Correa, very well put and congratulations on your English! It's very good!

I think before you have the seniority, you have to be ambitious. Obviously, people must think about growing in their career, having ambition, but respecting the others, which means, growing up, but no in any cost.
Foto
Por: Ash em 05/01/2010 às 10:09h
But not at any cost.
I agree, Edna!

You have to dare to try new things, otherwise you're going to be stuck in the same position until you retire...!

I totally agree with you, Raquel.

To get a new job or keep your job I believe we have to give your best every single day. No matters what!
Foto
Por: Josh em 22/03/2010 às 10:39h
No matter what, is truly the mind set you need to have to keep you job! Your sentence is fantastic, but I just want to point out one important thing: throughout your sentence you use "your" - "...to keep your job..." "...to give your best...", but in the middle you use "we". What you need to do is use the same "person" in every case: ...your job I believe you have to give your best... Do you see? Good job!
Foto
Por: jramabir em 03/06/2010 às 20:50h
Josh, I found this phrase,"is truly the mind set you need to have to keep you job", very, very interesting, but I didn't understand what that means. Would you mind explain that to me, please?
thank your very much.

Por: Josh em 04/06/2010 às 09:47h
A person's "mindset (mind-set)" is their mental attitude or set of assumptions a person has. It is the way they have 'set' (fixar) their 'mind' to think or act in a certain way. So if you have the correct 'mindset' when you perform a particular task, you will succeed at it.

hey josh and ash, i have a student who is wanting to work more on the advanced level. at this level, he thinks you should less portuguese commentary in the lessons. just a suggestion.
Foto
Por: Josh em 20/05/2010 às 10:21h
Thanks for the suggestion, Cris&Mark. Our methodology at meuInglês is to progress from lessons that are all in Portuguese (foundations & 101), to half and half (middle of the road with grammar explanations in Portuguese), to the majority in English (almost there with grammar explanations in Portuguese) to the I Rock lessons which are entirely in English. We don't want to shock the users too much with all-English lessons right after Middle of the Road. If your student wants to give it a shot, have him listen to some I Rock lessons, which are all in English.

Basically put, I think experience is important but if you want to get along with your job and mantain it is pretty prudent to worry about updating your personal qualification because of the tendency of the market economic system.Think about yourself as if you was a computer - a computer after three years in use it's completely inefficient if you don't had been upgraded it constantly.

Ok, JR., you are certainly a very opinionated person, and we love that here at meuInglês! Great job. Let's take a look at some corrections, ok? "To put it simply, I think having experience (being experienced) is important, but if you want to do your job well and keep it, it is prudent to worry about updating your personal qualifications because of the trends in the economic market system. Think of yourself as if you were a computer - a computer after three years in use is completely inefficient if it is not constantly updated."

I didn't understand some corrections.Would you mind explain why I can't use the phrasal verb "To get along with" in this case? And what de reason do you changed the "tendency" for "trends" if they are synonymous?
Thaks Josh, you are great pal, I feel that.

Por: Josh em 04/06/2010 às 10:30h
Hi! I wouldn't mind explaining at all. "To get along with" is used only when referring to people - you get along with your wife, you get along with your boss, ect. I believe what you wanted to say was "se dar bem com o seu trbalho'. In this case you would have to use a different structure. That's why I used "to do your job well". There's no clear translation, just the idea. Now for "trends", this is a collocation (words that are used in certain contexts and not in others). When you are talking about the economic market and how it behaves, you should use "market trends". 'Tendency' is a literal translation of 'tendências'. You might use 'tendency' like this: "My wife has a tendency to use her native Portuguese to yell at me instead of English." In this case you cannot use 'trend'. 'Trend' refers more to the direction towards which something develops or changes, while 'tendency' refers more to an inclination towards a particular characteristic or type of behavior.

I agree with your metaphorical saying. However, according to my point of view, to maintain a job is more difficult than to get it considering every kinds of situation we have to face in the daily routine.

Great sentence. I'm going to make some suggestions to make it a little smoother: "However, according to my point of view, maintaining a job is more difficult than getting one considering all the different kinds of situations we have to face on a daily basis.

Thank you teacher! Improving my English is all I want! Please, could you explain me the basis and routine's meaning? What's the difference between them... If it is possible, sure!

I think that to have the right skills for the position is very relevant to get a job. Although, maintaining it, besides these skills, it´s very important to have a good relationship with the colleagues and with the boss.
