Do you have weekly staff meetings where you work? They are certainly an important part of running a company smoothly! Now, can you give us a sentence using "some" and one using "any"?

I have some weekly staff meetings. That's great, because if we have any problem, we can discuss it.

The company Where I work for sometimes give us a chance to discuss any subject at the meetings, but this is not so usual.

You're right, Roberto, that isn't so usual. Sounds like a great company! Just one tip: you can say, the company where I work sometimes..., or, the company I work for sometimes.... Notice the difference?

LOL! Oh, Lanier I think sometimes it's easier to understand someone when you are speaking to him or her in person.

Hi there,
Actually almost every week I have staff’s meeting to catch my work up on to my boss and see whether I’m running behind schedule or ahead of schedule. These meeting sometimes take a long time, about two hours which for me it’s a waste of time because at most 30 minutes I get to catch up on everything. Some developing's companies started adopting every day stand up meetings, this just to waste a minimum of time and talk just the necessary, usually after 10 or 15 minutes all employees are tired and the meeting ends up.

Hi Fernando, I agree staff meetings have to be short and straight to the point. Some observations: "which for me isa waste of time" "this is done justto waste a minimum of time". Got it?

Hey, Fernando! I think what you meant with your first expression is something like "deixar o meu chefe atualizado", which would be "to bring my boss up to date". You can use the expression "to catch someone up on something", which means to "atualizar alguém sobre alguma situação". As always, it is great to hear from you!

Hey Monica, yeah, I got it. Thanks a lot for correcting me.
See you

Hey Josh, First up, thank you for clarifying it for me. Secondly, let me see if I figured all this out. Reconstructing my sentence, it would be sort of like that: Almost every week I have staff's meeting to catch my boss up on my work . Another example: I’ve ran into my friend and we've caught up on we've been doing lately . Another one: In the last meeting I've brought my boss up to date as for the issues we've been passing through . Josh, just let me know if I made any mistake, okay?
Thanks in advance.
See you

Hey there, Fernando! Josh is recording right now so allow me to correct your sentences: Almost every week I have a staff meeting to catch my boss up on my work. There is no possessive case used with staff, because it's used as an adjective. Second sentence: I've run into my friend and we've caught up (or we've been catching up) on what we've been doing lately. The past participle of "run" is run. And the third sentence: In the last meeting I brought my boss up to date on the issues we had been passing through. In the first part of the sentence, we use the past simple because we're talking about a specific time in the past, the last meeting; in the last part of the sentence we use the past perfect because we're talking about events that happened before the meeting. You're doing great, Fernando! Keep it up!

Hey Ash, sure thing I allow you to answer my question. Your responses are always welcome.Actually, I love them. lol. As for the corrections the first one and the second one were lack of my attention, but sometimes it's really tough to remember all past verbs, rules and stuffs like that.lol I haven't imagined that would be so difficult to learn a language, and some people say that english is an easy language to learn and portuguese that's a tough one to learn. Ash I can imagine what you passed through to learn portuguese. lol. Regarding the last sentence Ash, I used "passing through (present perfect continuos)" because we still are with problems, we cannot solve it yet. In portuguese it's possible but I don't know it is in english. In portuguese the sentence would be like that: Na última reunião eu atualizei meu chefe sobre os problemas que estamos passando.

Fernando, when people say English is an easy language to learn compared to other languages, they are absolutely right. But when you get into difficult expressions like the one we've been discussing, things can get a little "tricky" (especially when you've got an idiomatic phrasal verb with three prepositions! - to catch up on something with someone) But never fear! MeuInglês is here to help you out!
Foto
Por: Ash em 27/08/2009 às 10:22h
Well then, yes, Fernando, in that case you can use the present perfect continuous.

Got it.. Thanks a lot Josh and Ash.
Have a wonderful day.

Nowadays, I'm just taking care of my youngest daughter, but I always worked as a sales manager. I have to say that I had terrible meetings. The goals were more and higher and we suffered a lot of pressure. Today, I don’t want any sale job, I want some job more pleasant such as being English teacher rsrs.

Hi Roberta, I understand what you say, I imagine a sales job can be a stressful one and you want a job which is more pleasant. Well, I can't complain about being an English teacher, who knows, maybe one day I will say "Welcome to the team, Roberta!"

Hello. I think there is something wrong with the second part of the exercises (pick the correct answer). Every answer I choose, is said incorrect.

Oi Genilton! Hmm, I've done the exercises and nothing got marked as wrong for me. Check again, and let me know if it's still happening.

Hi Ash! I've tried once more and it's ok. Since I've installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, I'm facing some minor problems. But who didn't have any problems using Microsoft products?

Dear Teachers, please...I have a doubt on the sentence in the Lab: "•If this deal goes bad, he stands to lose millions!
In this case I shouldn't have to use the auxiliar "will" as First Conditional?Tks-Jane
Foto
Por: monicabic em 29/04/2010 às 21:41h
Jane, the exemplo from the Lab is what we call zero conditional (IF + PRESENT/PRESENT). It is used when we are talking about a natural consequence.

I must say, to crate some phrases in English without make any mistakes is realy very difficult to me. However, I haven't any problem to continue to try to get there.
