Introdução

There is one thing this little country has no shortage of and that's Welshness! Each year on March 1, the Welsh around the world celebrate St. David's Day in honor of Wales' patron saint; you guessed it, St. David. Daffodils and leeks, traditional clothing, parades, singing and of course lots of beer! Join us as we celebrate, or in this case, rue, the day after St. David's Day.

Barri Jones: Arrgh… My bloody head… The room won’t stop spinning…

Barri Jones: For Christ’s sake! Do me a favor and stop talking. You’re only making it worse.
Gerret Jones: Well it serves you right for drinking so much at the pub after the St. David’s Day parade. The rugby boys had to drag you home last night, you were so pissed.
Barri Jones: Shut your gob! You sound like our mother!

Happy St. David's Day to all, even if you're not Weslsh! Today is a day to celebrate Welsh heritage and culture. So girls pin on your daffodils and boys, well, you'll have to find the biggest leeks you can to pin on your jumper. Have a wonderful St. David's Day, all.

Were you able to understand the accents in this dialog? This is the type of accent you will hear if you travel to the UK.
Now, can you give us a sentence using both "make" and "do"?

Sei. os sotaques dos caras são difíceis, sim!
Agora, tem duas maneiras de dizer melhor a sua frase: "I have very difficult to understand the guy." Pode falar: "It was very difficult for me to understand the guy." Ou, "I had a very difficult time understanding the guy." Nós já usamos o sotaque britânico em varios diálogos, e, sim, no futuro nós vamos usar de novo! Mas até então, você pode escutar essa aula quantas vezes quiser até entender tudo diretinho!

Hey, Nan, don't worry, we Americans have a tough time understanding some British accents too, and they're speaking the same language! Wait until you hear a Scottish accent. You'll wish you never knew English!

Excellent class. British accent is difficult because we are not used to it. Once I heard a man from Newcastle... My Goodness! It was relly difficult to understand what he was talking about!

Yeah...I know what you mean, we have to adapt our ears to different accents but it's not always easy.

Great writing, linstawin! Just one thing, in English we would say, "THE British accent" or "British accentS". Keep up the good work!

Hi! There's a phrase in the lab "Every Sunday afternoon my grandparents WOULD TAKE a spin in their 1957 Cadillac". I thought WOULD must be used to express something that didn't happened yet, but in this phrase I think you're talking about something that ever happens (it happened last Sunday and will happen next Sunday, too). I 'm a bit confused.

Genilton, we use the modal verb "would" to also talk about events that occured frequently in the past. It it's kind of like the use of the pretérito imperfeito in Portuguese, dirigia, andava. For example, "When I was a teenager I would skip class to go to the beach." Quando eu era adoloscente eu matava aula para ir à praia."

Hi there! I really love these lessons about culture. These are my favorites. OMG, I swear that I've tried to understand that accent, but it is absolutely tough. The last phrase the guy said: You sound like our mother; it's the worst to understand. lol.
Guys, just a little question : the sentence I’ve the perfect hangover remedy for you, in this case that have isn't the auxiliary verb, it's a verb to have, is it possible to contract it (I’ve)? It sounds a bit weird for me.

Hey, Fernando! Like I always say: don't worry if you can't understand the accents. Americans often have a difficult time understanding other English speakers with different accents. Even within the U.S. we have a hard time understanding regional accents. To answer your question about the verb to have, you can use the contraction but it is a very British usage. You will most likely not hear an American saying I've a great idea! When talking about possession, we'll use the verb have got generally and make the contraction there: I've got a great idea. Great question, by the way. I hope I was able to answer it for you.

Yeah Josh, Perfect explanation.
As for accents, I've started to watch a British (London) series called the coupling , just to train British accent, and I didn't imagine it was so difficult. When I watch American series I manage to understand around 60%, but this series I understand less than 20%. It's frustrating. lol.. But I won't give up. lol

I don't know any miraculous drug to improve the memory, if you hear about one please let me know...So far what seems to work is just practice and more practice.

I made a promise that didn’t make any sense. I promise to my son that I would do cake and cookies for his friends if he took a good grade on the math exam. He did his best and I had to cook ten cakes because I didn’t know he had made a lot of new friends at school.

I love UK so much :p I´ve been to London three months ago to visit my cousins (who are living there for almost 10 years) and i think british accent so sexy lol Although it´s not so easy to understand than american accent i really love listening their talking!

Yeah, Susy, I agree, the UK is great! So, you~~'ve been~~ went to London three months ago to visit your cousins who ~~are~~ have been living there for almost 10 years.
You're not the only one I know who finds the British accent difficult, Susy! I know a lot of Brazilians who think that it is not so as easy to understand ~~than~~ as the American accent.
But a lot of people love listening to ~~their~~ them talk~~ing~~, that's for sure! lol!
