Introdução

It's never a fun thing to have to tell someone that his or her future with a company is uncertain, nor is it ever fun to receive such news. Unfortunately these situations are a reality, particularly with the way the global economy is going these days.  In this lesson you'll learn how to express what will be happening in the future...or not happening.

Metas

At the end of this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Use vocabulary to talk about events taking place in the future
  • Understand the use of the future continuous
  • Understand different expressions with put

Send your comment in the future continuous now.

I'll start off our task for this lesson: "In 2014, I'll be watching Brazil play the U.S. national team in the World Cup in Maracanã stadium!" What will you be doing in the future?

I'll be watching the French national team win the World Cup in Rio en 2014, but i can't tell you what team will be in the final against France...

Wow, VincenT, you seem so certain that France will win! I can't say anything about the American team because, well it's pretty obvious why, but I will be rooting for Brazil!!

Por: Josh em 09/10/2009 às 12:45h
Ashley! How could you not root for the U.S.? I think you have been living in Brazil for too long! LOL!

Hi VincenT. If France will be in the finals, I don't know. But if yes, France will be playing against Brazil, and I'm sure that Brazil will be the champion. Once more thing: unfortunately, maybe France will not be participating of World Cup in South Africa, in 2010.

Hey Josh! Can you explain to me when must I prefer to use future continuous instead of present continuous with future meanings??? Can I use them interchangeably?

Hey guys! Can you explain to me when must I prefer to use future continuous instead of present continuous with future meanings??? Can I use them interchangeably?
Foto
Por: Ash em 20/10/2009 às 15:54h
Excelent question, Genilton! In most cases, yes, you can use the future continuous and the present continuous with future meaning interchangeably. However, if we are talking about a future action which we know we will be in the middle of doing when something else happens then we must use the future continuous. For example, in a conversation between Jack and Mary, Jack asks Mary if he can call her at 3pm on Friday and Mary responds: No, I'll be giving a presentation at that time. This means she'll be in the middle of giving the presentation at 3pm. Aside from this rule, there really is no diference between these two stuctures.

*In 2016 I'll be traveling to Rio de Janeiro for watching The Olimpic games. How about you teacher? Or do you already live in Rio?

Teacher when you are explaining about the meaning of the word "incorporate" you say something, a word which I cannot understand it. It comes before that: 'to join or to integrate with', if you listen to the explanation of this topic I'm sure you'll be able to realize what I'm talking about.
Also I'd like you to tell me what's the meaning of these ones: "we've only got a couple of hours" and 'start off' in the sentence: "I'll start off our task for this lesson" and 'You're lucky' in this context:"You're lucky you didn't get arrested"! and 'get you in trouble' in the context: "that might get you in trouble"
That's all.
Thank you.

In the next few months I´ll be studying English in order to improve it.
I really need to get a better capacity of understanding and talking in English, because I´ve been working in a company where we used to receive, here in Brazil, people from the corporate headquarter based in Italy and we talk in English all the time .
Foto
Por: Josh em 24/06/2010 às 12:34h
Wow, Appel! It doesn't look like you have get better at understanding and speaking English (or writing it, for that matter) after I read your comment. I have only a couple of suggestions for you and one correction: "I really need to get better at understanding and speaking in English..." OR "I really need to improve my capacity to understand and speak in English..." My correction: corporate headquarters. It's always in the plural.
