Dialog: "Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by its nickname, Oscar..."

Inversion is when we change the word order of a phrase so that the verb comes before the subject. A question is the simplest example of how we use inversion in everyday English. However, the use of a verb at the beginning of a sentence is more formal, and therefore found more in written English than in Spoken English.

  • Kept behind bars for more than 30 years, the former convict had difficulty adjusting to his new life of freedom.
  • Elated by the news of her daughter's pregnancy, Donna went shopping for baby clothes.

Sobre esta aula

First, I'd like to thank the Academy for voting for me, uh, I'd also like to thank my family, the director, the cast and crew, my agent, my manager, my acting coach, my dog.....(yawn). Don't you wish they'd just give the artists the Oscar and then get them off stage without the speech? In today's lesson Ashley and Josh talk about the history of the statuette that's coveted by all filmmakers, the Oscar.
