USE OF REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
Dialog: "Basically, she told me just to take care of myself."

We use reflexive pronouns when the subject and object of a sentence are the same. We can also use them to emphasize the subject of the sentence to mean "that person or thing in particular". Here are their forms:

Subject                                 Reflexive Pronoun

I............................................myself

you.........................................yourself

he...........................................himself

she..........................................herself

it..............................................itself

one..........................................oneself*

we............................................ourselves

you (pl.) ...................................yourselves

they..........................................themselves

1) REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

  • I certainly hope I made myself clear to the doctors that I want a second opinion before I get the operation.
  • No one helped me do it. I did it myself. (emphasizing the subject)
  • What happened? Did you hurt yourself climbing that tree?
  • If he's going to get himself into shape, he's got to stop eating so much junk food!
  • Can you believe it? He climbed Mt. Everest all by himself with no help from the Sherpas. (emphasizing the subject)
  • Even though she knows it's not her fault, she blames herself for what happened.
  • This oven's great! It cleans itself!
  • *One must always be careful not to put oneself into a dangerous situation.
  • We consider ourselves pretty modern parents, but we still don't think our daughter should get a tongue piercing.
  • Although not aware of it at the time, they themselves were responsible for the accident. (emphasizing the subject)
  • They helped themselves to some hors d'oeuvres at the party.

*The use of "one" is used to talk about an unspecified individual; "oneself" is the reflexive pronoun. The use of "one" and "oneself" is quite formal and therefore not used in colloquial English.
