SHOULD
Dialog: "Uh, what should we do while we wait for it to come?"

The modal verb "should" can be used in questions that are offers or that request confirmation or advice.  It can also be used to talk about an expectation that will happen.

1) SHOULD (offers)

FORM:
SHOULD + SUBJECT + VERB

  • Should I buy the ticket for you and you can pay me back later?
  • You seem a bit tired. Should I drive?
  • Should I call you a taxi?

2) SHOULD (requests)

FORM:
SHOULD + SUBJECT + VERB

  • Should I spend New Year's Eve in New York or Los Angeles? (requesting advice)
  • Should I study Portuguese in Brazil? (requesting advice)
  • Should we arrive at 9:00 or 10:00? (requesting confirmation)

3) SHOULD (expectation)

FORM:
SUBJECT + SHOULD + BE + VERB (-ING) OR ADJECTIVE

  • The pizza should be arriving soon.
  • My boss should be ready for the conference call in the next ten minutes.
  • I really enjoyed her first novel, so the latest one should be good.
