FIRST X SECOND CONDITIONAL
Dialog: "I
swear, she'd forget her head if it weren't screwed on to her body."

1) 2ND CONDITIONAL

We use the Second Conditional to talk about a situation that is not a current possibility and may or may not be a possibility in the future. It can also be used to give advice.

FORM: IF + SUBJECT + VERB (simple past) + SUBJECT + WOULD + VERB (infinitive without "to")

  • If I were you, I'd try this cranberry sauce. It's delicious! (advice)
  • Would you cook more often if you had time? (improbability)
  • If Thanksgiving were this week, she wouldn't be able to come. (improbability)

2) 1ST CONDITIONAL

We use the First Conditional to talk about a strong possibility or certainty in the future.

FORM: IF + SUBJECT + VERB (simple present) + SUBJECT + WILL + VERB (infinitive without "to")

  • If you try it, you won't regret it. (strong possiblity)
  • I'm sure she'll forget the sweet potatoes if we don't remind her. (strong possibility)
  • If they don't behave, they'll have to go to the kids table. (certainty)
