REPORTED SPEECH
Dialog: "It says booking in advance is a very good idea."

When we want to tell someone what another person said we use reported speech. When the verb that reports (says, explain, etc.) is in the present simple the rest of the sentence usually remains in the present.

  • "John is going to be late."

Reported Speech:

She says (that*) John is going to be late.

  • "Travelling through Europe can be expensive if you don't know how to manage your budget."

Reported Speech:

He agrees (that*) travelling through Europe can be expensive if you don't know how to manage your budget.

  • "County Cork is the place to be for your summer vacation in Ireland."

Reported Speech:

They think (that*) County Cork is the place to be for your summer vacation in Ireland.

* The word "that" is optional for all uses of reported speech
